CANTON DETAIL
CANTON STORY
This section was created at the departures drop-off area of the El Paso International Airport in Texas. There were two security guards stationed on the curb just outside the door of the airport and I asked them if they would leave some marks on a piece of plywood for my project. One of the guards stepped on the flag multiple times and left his boot marks. The other guard was riding on an off-road Segway with huge knobby tires. He drove over the flag and left tire marks. Both guards were really into to being a part of the project and were willing to go back to the plywood to leave marks multiple times. The second guard was really excited to tell me about his Segway and how it could go off-road.

FIELD STORY
This section was created on a farm in Massachusetts that employs both undocumented seasonal workers as well as local people from the area. They grow strawberries among other things and use them to make strawberry pies, strawberry preserves, strawberry wine and a bunch of other products. The stripes are made of strawberry juice and fruit remnants. I asked a contact at the farm to leave the plywood piece in a place where it would get dirty during their processing of the strawberry harvest. I’m normally really prescriptive about my artwork but wanted for this project to be a bit more reflective of others so I’m not exactly sure where they put the plywood to gather these marks. I left the plywood with them for a couple weeks. When I went back to pick it up they apologized and told me they didn’t think it really worked. I’m not sure what they thought I was expecting but I love the marks and actually really like the way some of the juices worked their way under the stickers to blur the lines between the different stripes on the section.
